After years of struggling to make ends meet Sky Europe has suspended all flight operations and filed for bankruptcy. The low cost airline which carried almost four million passengers in 2008 has had problems paying airports, obtaining credit card payments, and much more so it’s not a surprise, certainly for those within the aviation industry to see Sky Europe go bankrupt.

Here’s the statement from their website :

Please be advised that SkyEurope has suspended its sales and operations immediately.

Those of you who have purchased flights with a credit card, please turn to your credit card issuing bank to seek refunds for unused portions of SkyEurope’s flights.

In case you have paid directly to SkyEurope in other means than credit card (e.g. bank transfer, cash), please be advised that a refund may not be possible.

If you have ordered your flight tickets via a travel agency or organizer, you should discuss the matter with them first.

If you are already at the destination or have rented a car through SkyEurope’s business partner, you may stay at the hotel and use the vehicle during the period originally agreed. You must, however, order a return flight from some other airline at your own expense.

You may also wish to contact your insurance provider to seek further guidance and support.

We regret for the inconvenience that have been caused to you.

In what must be a relief for rivals such as wizz air it is of course a personal tragedy for Sky Europe’s hard working staff, their investors and not least their passengers some of whom will now be stranded around Europe.

Clearly Michael O’Leary is as gifted at writing as he is at delivering financial results for Ryanair PLC. Anyone who has read one of his letters to the press must admit that he writes with a certain force, a touch of humour and a large dose of arrogance. Here is a recent comment from “MOL” on the subject of mobile phone usage onboard Ryanair flights.

“We’ve thus far had no complaints of any passengers who are annoyed by their cathedral-like sanctity of a Ryanair flight being besmirched by somebody on a mobile call“

Here is why I think Ryanair / Michael O’Leary should publish a blog :

They are already the kings of free publicity. This would help cement their position and feed the flames.

The blog would get hundreds of comments on every post, partly just because of who he is but also because each post would most likely be controversial and would incite comments from all over the world.

As above but for inlinks from other blogs and websites. This will help the blog and the Ryanair website in search engines.

The Ryanair blog could be used in the same way the Ryanair news section is now – to announce route changes, special offers and the more “political” manoeuvrings such as threatening to close bases if this and that doesn’t happen in Ryanair’s favour.

Airlines with successful blogs include Iceland Express and Southwest airlines. A lesser known example is the flyforbeans blog which doesn’t have many posts but has at least got articles from the most of the management of this long planned start up airline. Richard Branson also has a blog.

Economy Class passengers now have a baggage allowance of 30kgs – up from 20kgs, the Business Class allowance has increased from 30kgs to 40kgs, and First Class from 40kgs to 50kgs.

These new, generous allowances, which are effective for all tickets issued on or after 4th May, have been implemented across the airline’s extensive global network of over 100 destinations.

Carriers such as British Airways have an Economy Class checked luggage allowance of 23kgs per passenger, whilst the Economy Class allowances on Singapore Airlines and Cathay Pacific are from 20kgs per passenger.

Nabil Sultan, Emirates Divisional Senior Vice President Revenue Optimisation, said: “Emirates has moved to these new free baggage levels to further demonstrate our commitment to putting the passenger first. By offering travellers the flexibility to carry significantly more baggage we will be allowing them to take more gifts for family and friends or take advantage of the outstanding shopping in Dubai and across the extensive network of Emirates destinations.”

Gold and Silver Members of Skywards, Emirates frequent flyer programme are entitled to an additional baggage allowance of 16 kgs over their ticketed allowance for Gold members and additional 12 kgs for Silver. Codeshare passengers travelling on Emirates operated flights are also eligible for the revised free baggage allowances.

Emirates‘ regular rates will be applied to baggage in excess of these new allowances.

Virgin Atlantic, jointly owned by Singapore Airlines and Richard Branson’s Virgin Group, has been quick to attack the proposed merger of British Airways and Qantas.

Virgin Atlantic chief executive Steve Ridgway said, “One day it’s Iberia, then it’s American, and now Qantas. The only strategy BA seems to have is to lock-up some of the busiest routes in the world, against the consumer interest”.

Virgin Atlantic, 49 percent owned by Singapore Airlines (SIA), but controlled by Richard Branson’s Virgin Group, competes with British Airways (BA) on the transatlantic route. SIA competes with Qantas from/to Australia.
