A Turkish Airways 737-800 has crash landed at Amsterdam (AMS)
Flight number TK 1591 from Istanbul and destination Amsterdam crashed in a field near the runway furthest away from Schiphol’s terminals according to officials from Schipol airport authority.
The aircraft broke into three sections on impact and its jet engines landed sapproximately 100 metres away from the wreckage in a muddy field. It is thought there were no injuries to anyone on the ground but from the plane 9 people have been confirmed dead and a further 25 are reported to be seriously injured.
During its 75 year history, Turkish Airlines has had three major accidents on its international flights, and 18 on domestic flights. There have also been serious accidents at Schipol in the past two decades. The most recent was in April 1994 when KLM flight KL433 to Cardiff elected to return to the airport, and also crash landed. The captain and two passengers died and nine were injured in that incident.
Amsterdam airport handles more than 47million passengers a year including many transit passengers.In terms of passenger numbers based on 2008, Schipol is the fifth largest airport in Europe behind Heathrow, Paris CDG, Frankfurt and Madrid.
