Affected passengers yet to travel should contact the travel agency or tour operator they have booked with for further information. Some companies will offer a refund while others will work with customers to find alternative flights and where applicable make amendments to existing accommodation and transfer arrangements.

The Norwegian low cost airline with bases in Scandinavia and Poland have increased by 274 000 passengers and 26 percent compared with July last year. Norwegian which is arguably the third largest low cost airline in Europe thus has broken it’s passenger record for the third consecutive month.

“It is gratifying that the positive development of traffic continues in July with full pressure. The aviation industry has had some turbulent months because of the closed sky and third party strikes in several countries, but the strong passenger growth shows that confidence in the Norwegian and the aviation industry in general is very much back where it was and should be, ” says CEO Bjørn Kjos .

The load factor for the Group (Norwegian Air Shuttle) stood at 85 percent in July, down 3 percent since last year. The company operated 99.7 percent of its scheduled flights, of which 79.2 percent were on time. Punctuality was strongly influenced by third-party strikes in Greece and France, in addition to slot delays in northern Spain, France, Greece and Croatia because of high summer traffic in the sky.

Mr Justice McCombe’s ruled that the union representing British Airways cabin crew had not followed rules regarding contacting it’s members about the strike ballot results.

BA won the injunction thanks to a legal technicality within the Trade Union And Labour Relations Consolidation Act of 1992… Within this act are rules stating that after a strike ballot trade unions must contact all their members and provide an exact breakdown of the votes.

British Airways was able to argue that Unite had not discharged that obligation effectively.

Unite say they will appeal against the ruling.

As British Airways challenged the latest strike action today on a legal technicality, cabin crew were preparing to strike over the following days : May 18-22 inclusive, May 24-28 inclusive, May 30-June 3 inclusive and June 5-9 inclusive.
British Airways had to cancel flights yesterday due to Volcanic ash clouds and although they plan to operate around 50% of their scheduled flights during the strike dates, if the strikes go ahead BA will be facing reporting their lowest passenger numbers for many years come the end of the month.

The new UK Government Transport Secretary Philip Hammond (Conservative) is expected to hold talks with both sides in the dispute in a last ditch effort to prevent the strikes from going ahead.

When the merger becomes a reality, probably towards the end of 2010, it will mean the creation of a mega-corporation with 508 aircraft, which annually has about 58 million passengers, which still leaves it flying in the wake of some of it’s European rivals.

The merger of the two “flag-carriers” will place the merged airline in fourth place in Europe in terms of passenger numbers after Ryanair, Lufthansa Group and Air France-KLM. It is expected there will be a reduction in aircraft over at least the first couple of years post merger though, as the combined airlines pools resources and make better utilisation of the existing fleet.

The main goal of the merger is of course reducing operating costs, which after five years shall be reduced by around £400 million annually according to analysts today.

A joint holding company, International Airline Group (IAG) has been formed which will be headquartered in London, but registered in Spain. The holding company will own British Airways and Iberia as operating companies. BA shareholders will own 55% of the holding company and get an IAG share for each share BA, while Iberia’s shareholders receive 45% of shares in the holding company and receives 1.0205 IAG shares per Iberia share.

In addition to the deal being pending approval from relevant authorities and the respective shareholders there must be a solution to British Airways pension fund deficit which currently suffers from a deficit of 3.7 billion pounds. Iberia has a specific get out clause should a solution not be found.

British Airways CEO Willie Walsh will continue as CEO of the merged company, while Iberia’s chairman, Antonio Vazquez, the CEO of the joint company.
