Renting your apartment or house out to travellers can be a great way to earn money! The newest holiday home rental website on the scene is “Wimdu”, an innovative service which links holidaymakers with hosts. From the point of view of the traveller, there are three types of holiday letting – a shared room, meaning sharing a bedroom (but not a bed!) with the host or other travellers, a private room and finally a whole space which is where you get the whole property for the duration of the rental.

Wimdu – Your perfect holiday accommodation is just a few clicks away, Wimdu lists thousands of holiday rental rooms and homes for every budget and destination with reviews and photos. List with Wimdu and earn from your empty spaces!

From the hosts perspective, Wimdu offers a very low cost way to earn money on their property. There is no listing charge and only a small percentage charge is made for each confirmed booking.

Wimdu is a worldwide holiday letting service – so long as the property can be found on a Google map, it can be listed on the website.

Airport Car Parking can turn out to be quite an expensive “hidden-cost” when taking a flight for a holiday or business trip. Airports have come under criticism for high parking charges but claim they have to find extra revenue to meet the ever increasing costs of running an airport. The most expensive airport car parks are the on airport car parks nearest to the passenger terminals.

According to recent analysis by EuroParking.co.uk, if you “turn up and pay” and choose one of the on-airport car parks, particuarly at a busy and business focused airport such as Heathrow you can pay as much as £100 over the odds for a one week stay. Even if you are intending to book online before the day of departure, don’t delay because, it has been known for airport car parks to get full even a couple of months before peak dates such as Easter and the school summer holidays.

Tip : Use this Holiday Extras Voucher Code page (bookmark it) to take advantage of extra savings, after all why pay more for the same parking space ?

Cheaper Airport Parking

Your best bet when looking to save money on airport parking is to book in advance, online. For the best deals use an off airport parking facility. The only drawback with those is that you have to wait for a shuttle bus to take you to and from the airport terminal.

Traditional airlines mastered the art of opaque pricing early on in their existence. The classic example is a business man that booked through a business travel agency the day before depature who paid €500 for his flight, while sat next to him is a student that booked online three months before departure and paid €25 ! This is an area of airline pricing that is constantly on the move as airlines seek to maximise their revenue but crucially get their seats full (load factor).

As this article in the Telegraph highlights consumers are constantly looking for bargains and discounts over and above (or should that be below?!) the ticket price on all sorts of products and services – not just travel. As many airlines now sell over 90% of their flight tickets online, we had a quick look at a few of the major airlines to see if they had discount codes or not.

Ryanair – No discount codes in the booking form.

easyJet – There is a “promo code” in the booking form, but our research this is only for discounts on “speedy boarding”.

BA – There is no discount code or voucher code at Brititsh Airways website.

Discount codes aside, when was the last time you went onto one of the large airline websites and there wasn’t a “sale” , “discount” or “special offer” ? (always time limited and always hard to find the seats at the advertised price :) )

The article in the Telegraph finishes with “The only worry is that we may find the marked prices on menus and clothes continue to creep up to pay for all of these vouchers, so that only the savvy get the discounts, and the less internet-aware pay the price.”….. That has been happening in the travel industry for many, many years.

British Airways has unveiled a top-ten list of the holiday destinations that have been most popular with passengers from The UK that are planning on flying away this April to make the most of the bonus bank holiday on 29th April 2011, thanks to the Royal wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in London.

BA spokesperson Claire Bentley told Airline-News.co.uk “We’re already seeing a heavy demand for overseas holidays from our UK customers thanks to the extra bank holiday on 29th April.”

She added: “Thanks to our exciting range of new leisure destinations, including Marrakech, and even more flights to the always popular Caribbean, customers are sure to find that British Airways can help them celebrate the royal wedding in style wherever we fly them.”

Locations such as Cancun, New York, Las Vegas, the Maldives, Venice, Dubrovnik and Jersey have all been attracting substantial bookings over the Easter period.

There was also good news for holiday companies such as Barbados Deals in the announcement. The Caribbean holiday destinations, such as Barbados have also been ‘proving to be a hit with families’, British Airways has also said in a short commentary accompanying the top ten list.

BA will be increasing the frequency of it their flights to Barbados, St Lucia, Antigua and Tampa from the end of March 2011, providing more travel options for people heading to leisure destinations for Easter and the rest of April.

British Airways has announced that they are dropping their Gatwick to Sharm El Sheikh service from May 2011.

The airline has claimed the decision to make the cancellation was the result of a poor commercial performance rather than the recent uprising by pro-democracy protestors in Egypt (Sharm El Sheikh has been relatively un-disturbed by the protests).

Airline-News.co.uk comment :
Sharm El Sheikh is a very popular package holiday destination for tour operators like Thomson who even offer Red Sea Cruises based on flights to “Sharm” (SSH). Perhaps though a popular destination for package holidays and now cruises, it’s still too early for the market to bear scheduled flights on large aircraft such as the BA 777. Maybe in a couple of years there will be sufficient demand though.

The three times weekly service will stop from May 2 2011, although a spokesperson for British Airways said that it would be reviewing the route in time so wouldn’t draw a line under the service altogether.

The BA press spokesperson told Airline News “Based on the passenger levels currently booked and current levels of forecast demand for the summer, a Boeing 777 with 280 seats is not the right aircraft for Sharm-El-Sheikh services.
“Unfortunately we do not have a feasible shorthaul solution for this route for the summer and have taken the decision to suspend our flights.”

British Airways only launched the Gatwick-Sharm El Sheikh route last October. Franchise partner GB Airways (now part of easyJet) had previously operated a service to the destination under the BA flag though.

With many tour operators and online travel agencies already offering free child places and up to 50% discounts holidaymakers can look forward to some of the best post-Christmas sales ever reports travel website iNEEDaholiday.co.uk who predict that Monday 24th January 2011 will set a record for holidays booked online.

The snowy and icy weather in December has led to an even bigger than normal spike in web traffic to travel and airline websites this January and it seems like travel companies are being less conservative with discounts than in previous years – preferring to fill up their planes as long before departure as possible, rather than run the risk of empty seats.

Among the best travel deals are big savings from leading tour operators Thomson Holidays, Thomas Cook as well as Jet2 which is growing it’s capacity substantially from Northern England and Scottish airports.

Rob Barham, spokesperson for iNEEDaholiday.co.uk, which launched a revamped site at the turn of the year commented, that traffic was substantially increased compared to the same time last year. Mondays are always big days for holiday bookings – what we observe is that people research and compare prices over the weekend and actually make their bookings on the Monday when they have checked the dates at work.

We’re already seeing many deep discounts on package holidays like deals of 50% and more to Spain, Greece and Turkey, and so our advice to people is to shop around and do your research online to get the best prices on your next holiday.

iNEEDaholiday.co.uk is a travel offers website based in the UK.

If you want to book a flight simulator experience in England, here is a great idea – With this package you get a full half hour hands on flying experience in the Boeing 737 simulator and a further half hour as a passenger.
Here’s a couple of reviews of the flight simulator experience : (Click for more)

“The day started with a thorough briefing about the aircraft and its systems followed by a most enjoyable session in the simulator. The instructor was enthusiastic, supportive and clearly very knowledgeable. I found the experience challenging but exhilarating. I would highly recommend this experience to anyone wishing to find out what it’s like to be in control of a large aircraft.”

“Great insight into how planes work. The fact that it is set in an actual front of a plane made it feel so real. We did several landings in different circumstances, for example at night, in the rain and with strong winds. You don’t realise the effect these factors have on planes until you do this experience.”

You can even take passengers on your flying experience – you can bring along 2 passengers for the flight who will be sitting in the (separate) cabin area. Minimum age is 10 years old making this a great gift idea for a budding pilot or aviation enthusiast.
